THE GOBOWEN-based Orthopaedic Hospital has applied to build a new two-storey extension to its £15 million theatre and oncology complex.

The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) near Oswestry has submitted and application for a two-storey extension on Friday, April 28.

The expansion would include a modular extension at the front of the existing hospital, with plant space provided above.

In their planning application introduction, Michael Bowen of RJAH said: “This will connect into the existing theatre accommodation and will provide four additional theatres at the first floor with recovery beds and associated supporting accommodation.

OTHER NEWS:

“Initially shell space is to be created at ground floor to allow for future expansion of the hospital’s clinical space – while this clinical use has yet to be defined, the space is not intended to be used as ward accommodation.”

While no formal pre-application information was sought, the planning introduction explained: “However, a meeting to discuss the proposals was held on site at 2pm on Thursday November 10 2022.

“This meeting was attended by Philip Mullineux (Development Manager, Shropshire Council) and Jacob Hillman (Pinnegar Hayward Design), with the discussion focused on the rhythm of the elevations, potential materials, pitched roofs and the existing building line.”

The new theatres will provide additional orthopaedic surgery capacity to complement the existing theatres within the hospital building.

They will provide better clinical space, to suit the current clinical practices, and it was chosen to meet the current demand, while minimising the disruption to the existing theatres and addressing the potential backlog in specialist operations.

This will continue to reduce waiting lists, which have increased as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Border Counties Advertizer:

“The much-needed refurbishment of the existing theatres is planned to be undertaken at a later date, the extension will allow that to happen with minimal disruption,” the introduction reads.
