THE organiser of an event that brought a two-time Olympic gold medallist to Oswestry is hoping it will inspire the next generation of athletes.

Alan Lewis, who owns Adrenaline Sporting Events, hosted a special question and answer night featuring Alistair Brownlee who won Olympic triathlon gold in 2012 and 2016, at Oswestry School last week.

Alan, who previously welcomed cyclist Ed Clancy to the town earlier in 2021, said the event proved the lure of top-class stars for fans as hundreds of people from all over the UK attended.

And he added that they were treated to an insight to the mind of one of Britain's most successful athletes in recent years.

"If we can bring this type of athlete to Oswestry to inspire, or help to inspire, not just the current generation but future generations then that would be really cool," he said.

"There were a lot of kids there and it was pretty good."

Alan added: "We had 450 people there and some came up for the day, staying in a local hotel and were out visiting an attraction.

"We had people from London, Devon, Norfolk, Suffolk, Manchester – it was incredible and Alistair didn't let us down.

"He gave us a great insight for his whole life, from being a little boy in Yorkshire to smashing two gold medals in back-to-back Olympics.

"But he also talked about now, where he's not having a great time with injury and illness.

"It was really insightful, really good and Oswestry School was a great venue for it so I was super happy with it.

"The Midlands Air Ambulance was able to raise £700 at the event because of the raffle we put on."

Alan admitted he is targeting a regular run of events to keep bringing top class stars to the town.

He said: "Ultimately I'm super happy to have brought an athlete of this standing to our little town is really rewarding, and to see how happy it made people was great.

"To do that makes me very proud and also – not to get ahead of ourselves – it's the second Olympian who's been really successful that we've brought to town.

"We brought cyclist Ed Clancy to town in February and now we've brought a very different athlete in Ali in Novembers.

"I'm really proud and really happy with it and I want to continue this on in 2023."
