THERE are many dogs looking for a forever home, and here is a selection of greyhounds needing love and care at a north Shropshire charity.

Hector's Greyhound Rescue is a charity run by volunteers that dedicate their time saving and rehoming ex-racing Greyhounds and other sighthounds.

The team has some advice for people looking to adopt one of the hounds, and are offering support for anyone that took one of the dogs in their care.

A spokesman, from the rescue charity, said: "We rarely rehome our greyhounds to families with small children, greyhounds are large dogs and can knock small children over.

"Another reason we ask for no young children is due to sleep startle, this happens when someone touches the dog during sleep/naps, and they can react with a nasty bite as they are startled.

"Ex racing greyhounds spend most of their early lives in kennels, they are not used to being disturbed during rest, they have a very high prey drive, this comes from the training to run on the tracks, therefore we ask that once you rehome a greyhound from us you walk them with a muzzle, it’s not cruel and the hounds are completely used to it," they added.

Here are five of hounds looking for forever homes:

  • Manny

Border Counties Advertizer: Manny

Manny is a four-year-old black ex racing greyhound. He is very lovable and enjoys company. Therefore, we ask he be rehomed with someone who is around most of the day, he craves company and feels complete when humans are around. Due to being an ex-racer he isn’t suitable to live with cats or small dogs. He still has some decompression to do from his racing days and once this is complete, he will be the most loving, docile greyhound who just wants to snuggle on the sofa.

  • Sam

Border Counties Advertizer: Sam

Sam is an eight-year-old senior man looking for the quiet life. His needs are very little, just love. He’s not too interested in big, long walks anymore so a companion home would be ideal. He is not a big fan of small fluffies or yappy dogs so a quiet home with a comfortable bed would be ideal. Sam is currently in foster care and has had glowing reports of being very clean in the home.

  • George

Border Counties Advertizer: George

George is a shy but cheeky two-year-old greyhound. He would benefit from someone who is around most of the day as he adores human company, he is not cat or small furry animal safe. George struggles with his confidence, we think this is due to his past and he is very shy around men. He would love a play friend and would be happy living with children over the age of ten as he loves a good game of football. Once George gets to know you, he is a hilarious goof ball that will make you laugh with his magic ability to make dog beds explode.

  • Beano

Border Counties Advertizer: Beano

Beano is a three-year-old big beautiful bouncy greyhound. Beano adores to play ball and is very enthusiastic about it too. He loves the long summer evening as does enjoy being outside soaking up the good weather. Due to his enthusiasm and size, he would be best suited to someone who understands greyhounds. He could happily live with children over ten years and join in all the fun and games.

  • Blackjack

Border Counties Advertizer: Blackjack

Blackjack is a five-year-old greyhound who has been with us for over a year and had little no interest, he keeps being overlooked which bemuses us here at Hector’s as he is adorable. He’s a beautiful natured hound who has so much love to give. He loves his toys and loves to play, he’s also as lazy as he is playful and loves a good snuggle. He would benefit from another greyhound for company and would be best suited to a retired couple or someone who works from home.
