ONE of the most famous choirs in the UK will be coming to a theatre outside of Oswestry at the start of next month.

The Fron Male Voice Choir, which has been running for 75 years and will be celebrating its anniversary ahead of a special concert at the Holroyd Theatre in Weston Rhyn on Saturday, October 1.

The singers will be joined on the day by the Mersey Wave Choir, which has links to the Fron choir, and will be entertaining audiences at the theatre based at Moreton hall School.

A spokesman for the theatre said: "The Fron Choir celebrates its 75th Anniversary having been formed in 1947 to compete at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

"The Choir shot to worldwide fame in 2006 when the manager of boy band ‘Blue’ saw them singing at a wedding in the Dee Valley and won them a contract with Universal Records/Decca Music.

"The choir became successful very quickly with number one hits in the classical charts and record sales, culminating in both Gold and Platinum Discs.

"Over the intervening years the group has toured a lot of the world and sold almost two million of the Voices of the Valley series of albums, the sixth of which – 'Voices of the valley – Echoes' was released just this year and is now widely available.

"Fron Male Voice Choir has won major competitions such as the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival and, in 2018, they won the prestigious Male Voice Choir Competition at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod for the fourth time, now under the leadership of their musical director Leigh Mason.

"The guests for this concert are the Mersey Wave Choir – a mixed choir run by the Fron’s accompanist, Jason Ellis, which he helped to form in 2012.

"Since then they have appeared all over the region as well as on BBC’s The One Show and for many charities in the city.

"The two choirs have performed together on numerous occasions over the years in Liverpool, but this is Mersey Wave’s first visit to the Fron’s home territory."

Tickets for the event at the Holroyd Theatre in Weston Rhyn, which is from 7-9pm, cost £18.85 and can be bought at https://theholroydtheatre.co.uk/events_post_item/autumn-choral-concert/
