The Met Office has put out a yellow storm warning for north Shropshire and the Welsh Border areas.

The alert has been put out with stormy weather set to hit the county from early this afternoon (Monday, September 5) and is expected to last until the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The weather service is warning that there could be blustery winds and a that residents should take care, especially when travelling.

Travel is expected to be disrupted, with driving conditions likely to be affected by spray, standing water, hail and gusty winds- leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

What impact could the storms have?

The Met Office is also warning that delays to some train services are “likely.”

It has also been warned that there is a possibility of power cuts in affected areas overnight with the Met Office saying in a statement that “some short-term loss of power and other services is likely”.

It also says some areas of the county could be in danger of localised flooding of a few homes and businesses likely warning that the this could lead “to some damage to buildings or structures.”

The Met Office is also warning of probable lightning and high winds and said there would probably “be some damage to a few buildings and structures from either lightning strikes or gusty winds”.

When could the lightning hit Shropshire?

The forecast suggests that Oswestry could see thunderstorms arriving late tonight, with lightning expected to arrive with a bang at 11pm, with more to come on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Further east in Whitchurch lightning is forecast to come in several spells, from 5pm, 7pm, and 11pm. More could come on Tuesday at 7pm and 1pm on Wednesday.
