The longest-serving firefighter in the history of Llanfyllin's station is getting ready to hang up his helmet.

After 40 years of being a firefighter and 32 years of being a fire chief, David Evans is saying goodbye to Llanfyllin Fire Station. He has served the station longer than any other firefighter, and has also been fire chief longer than anybody else.

Although he has "mixed emotions" about leaving those positions, Dai will still help the crew with recruiting and he will always "be on hand" when needed.

He said: "It has been one of the best experiences, I could not recommend it enough."

Dai enrolled into the fire service in 1982 in which was then Powys Fire Service, he gained promotion to crew manager in 1990 and later that year promoted to watch manager.

"I love the fire station," he added. "It is top of the range, especially now, with all the new equipment and fire engines."

He said when he started firefighters wore yellow caps, yellow tights and big coats when on call, but now they have "top of the range" equipment, which is far more protective.

"Things have changed since I started," he added. "It even used to be called Llanfyllin Fire Brigade back then.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, but for me the time is right to leave.

"Everyone around me is supporting my decision"

Dai has taken part in and aided about 2,000 calls since he started, with people always "happy to see him coming to help".

Even after retiring at the Fire Station, he will carry on his job as a caretaker at the Public Institute in Llanfyllin.
