TNS are out of the cup after losing to old rivals Connah's Quay Nomads with the Deesiders prevailing 5-4 on penalties after the tie ended 1-1 after extra time.

Defeat represented the Saints second consecutive season when they have exited the Nathaniel MG Cup at the first hurdle while continuing their miserable summer which saw them crash out of two European competitions in a month.

Anthony Limbrick paid the price with his departure followed by the return of Craig Harrison as manager last week having departed Nomads.

Ex-TNS man Aeron Edwards sent a close-range header over the crossbar as the home side began brightly but the Saints also looked lively with Ryan Brobbel and Jordan Williams seeing their shots blocked.

TNS led after 37 minutes with veteran Mike Wilde seizing on a loose ball to drive past goalkeeper Connor Roberts.

Looking for a way back into the match, Williams sent a curling effort wide moments later while Brobbel went close five minutes later.

TNS began the second-half on top with Williams' 58th minute effort turned away by new signing Andy Firth in the Nomads goal.

Eleven minutes later, Brobbel almost grabbed an equaliser with an effort on the turn only to drag wide.

Brobbel levelled with 12 minutes remaining with a wonderful solo run and finish and he almost completed a last gasp win only for his injury time effort to be blocked on the line by Nomads defender Horan.

Extra-time failed to to yield a breakthrough with the match decided on penalties.

Brobbel spurned the opening kick for the Saints with Callum Morris firing Nomads ahead from the spot before Declan McManus opened TNS' account.

George Horan was denied by Roberts before Adrian Cieslewicz restored parity from the spot.

Roberts denied Wilde from the spot but Ryan Astles failed to capitalise with Firth making the save from the following penalty.

Firth denied Ben Clark to set the stage for ex-TNS player Ryan Harrington to slot home the decisive penalty as the Deesiders toasted glory.
