A SHROPSHIRE councillor serving on Oswestry Town Council has called on the unitary authority to explain why residents have had to wait for a vital speed restriction to be implemented.

The motion has been put forward by Councillor Duncan Kerr, who represents Castle Ward in Oswestry and Oswestry South at county level, to be debated at the development and planning committee on Wednesday.

The call comes after Shropshire Council implemented a 20mph zone in Porthill, near Shrewsbury, and Cllr Kerr wants Oswestry's town clerk to write to the council demanding an answer as to why similar action has not taken place in Oswestry.

The motion reads: "This council welcomes the decision of Shropshire Unitary Council to implement a 20mph in the Porthill ward, Shrewsbury.

"In the light of this, we are asking the clerk to write to the portfolio holder reminding him that Oswestry Town Council has been calling for a town implementation of 20's plenty since 2012 and ask for an urgent meeting to understand why residents of Oswestry have had to wait over a decade to share the health, economics and climate change benefits of 20's plenty."

The 20's plenty is a campaign to make cities, town and villages safer and less polluted, by imposing a 20mph zone.

Meanwhile, there will be a number planning items for discussion by members.

The meeting will be held Wednesday, July 6 at 7pm in the Council Chamber at the Guildhall, Oswestry.
