New housing developments in villages around Oswestry "demonstrate commitment" to meeting need in the county, Shropshire Council says.

The authority used Rural Housing Week 2022, which began on Monday, July 4 until runs until Friday, July 8, to display the work that the council and its and their partners undertake to support rural communities.

The annual campaign's aim is to show the work that housing associations do in rural communities, like the Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing (STAR Housing), which is a company that is run at "arm's length" by Shropshire Council.

The company has already begun work to develop higher quality and affordable housing in Whittington and Weston Rhyn, that are due for completion in 2023.

Sue Adams, managing director at STAR Housing, said: "This latest development really demonstrates our continued commitment to providing affordable homes in areas that need them most."

The problems that housing in rural communities are significant, as they are missing key and urgent metrics such as infrastructure, productivity and pay.

Ian Jones, a local councillor and chair of the steering group for the development, added:" I value the availability of low cost, affordable, quality housing in the area, and with growing demand, this community-led project is something we are very proud of."

The Weston Rhyn development, meanwhile, aims towards the HAPPI principles (Housing our Ageing Population Panel for Innovation) which will provide flexible spaces, level access shower rooms, external mobility scooter stores for each home, and a passenger lift.

Both of these developments are community-led schemes, therefore there is a lot of involvement from local community to design properties to meed local housing need in individual villages.
