A PAIR of railway fare dodgers from Chirk have received fines after appearing in court for separate offences.

Paul Jones, of St Mary's Close, was found guilty in his absence when his case was heard at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Friday, May 20.

The court was told how the 50-year-old had travelled between Ruabon and Wrexham General on November 8, last year, but without having paid the fare of £3.60 to Transport for Wales and with intent to avoid payment.

He was fined £220 and must also pay £180 in court costs, plus a £34 victim surcharge.

Jones must also pay £3.60 in compensation to TfW, making a total of £437.60.

Meanwhile, in a separate hearing, magistrates heard the case of Amani Roberts, of West View in Chirk.

The 22-year-old was accused of failing to pay £5.30 to TfW to travel between Telford Central and Shrewsbury on November 1, last year, and with the intent of avoiding payment.

He pleaded guilty and was fined £40.

Roberts must also pay £90 court costs, a £34 victim surcharge, and £5.30 compensation to TfW, making a total of £259.30,
