THE A5 was closed near Gobowen on Wednesday (May 18) afternoon after a car caught fire.

Oswestry Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) confirmed the road was closed between the Orthopaedic and Gledrid roundabouts while emergency services attended the incident.

It led to major congestion around Gobowen with police urging motorists to find alternative routes.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed one crew from Oswestry was in attendance.

A spokesperson said: ""This incident involved one saloon vehicle which was 100 per cent destroyed by fire.

"Holmatro spreaders were used to gain access to the boot and engine compartment."

The callout came shortly before 3pm.

One crew from Oswestry is in attendance and they have used breathing apparatus, cutters/spreaders, and a hosereel jet to put out the fire.

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed they were not in attendance.
