NORTH Shropshire MP Helen Morgan has called on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to "swallow his pride" and implement a windfall tax on oil and gas companies after it was rejected in a House of Commons vote.

MPs had their say in Parliament on Tuesday (May 18) with the vote rejected by 310 votes to 248.

All the Conservative MPs who cast their ballot voting against it.

Currently, bills are rising fast and inflation has reached a 40 year high of nine per cent.

Ms Morgan, who voted in favour of the tax, said the Government was failing to tackle the cost-of-living crisis.

She added: "Every day I’m contacted by families in Shropshire struggling to put food on the table and pay the bills and yet Conservative MPs have again voted against helping them.

"It’s not fair that oil and gas giants are making record profits while people at home try to cope with prices rising at their fastest rate for 40 years.

"The Government is in chaos and failing to deal with the cost-of-living crisis.

"That’s why the Chancellor must swallow his pride and announce a U-turn on the windfall tax today."

Earlier this month it was revealed BP's profits doubled to £5 billion in the first three months of this year while Shell made over £7 billion during the same period.
