Plant stall returns

Montgomery Gardening Club will running its annual and much-anticipated plant stall in Arthur Street on Saturday, May 14 from 9am until 12.30pm.

Friendship to be celebrated

Montgomery will finally see the official unveiling of the Janos Arany plaque this coming Saturday, May 14th.

The plaque was presented to Montgomery on the conferring of a posthumous honorary Freemanship of Montgomery on the National Poet of Hungary who based his best known work, The Bards of Wales, at Montgomery Castle.

The 2022 celebration will be bigger than that originally planned thanks to the burgeoning friendships of town and school that grew from the Building Bridges videos during the intervening years.

Friday will see a day of cultural activities at the school, including a live link with Kunagota in south east Hungary, dubbed ‘the Welshest village in Hungary’.

At 12.30pm on Saturday there will be the opportunity to dance with a troupe of Hungarian folk dancers before the unveiling ceremony at 2.30pm.

A range of activities will follow including a recitation of ‘The Bards’ at the Castle, heritage walks, a short literary discussion and traditional games for children, all topped off by a splendid concert in St Nicholas’ Church at 6,30pm.

The concert will feature recitals from celebrated Hungarian opera singers Tamas Egresi and Elizabeth Sillo alongside homegrown musicians and the Kodaly Kids violin school.

The concert is free entry with a retiring collection in aid of Ukrainian refugees.

Throughout the afternoon there will be local and Hungarian food and craft stalls on Arthur Street, a special exhibition at The Old Bell Gallery, a Hungarian Cafe at Ivy House, music and pop-up folk dancing.
