AN OSWESTRY-based tennis club is celebrating after winning planning permission for a sports clubhouse to be built in Cae Glas Park.

Clive Knight, from Oswestry Team Tennis, which is junior priority club, admitted they were delighted to get the go-ahead for their project.

But he admitted the approval is an early decision on what will be a long journey for the club in reaching their final vision.

"We're really delighted with the decision giving the permission," said Clive.

"The workshop has been of great use in the park and now it's going to be recycled into something that is brilliant for the community.

"Having a dedicated house for the club is huge. Without it, players have to stay outside on the courts, which isn't great during inclement weather.

"It will be great for members but hopefully it will motivate new players to join as well."

Mr Knight says the next stage of the project for the club is to secure the relevant finance to ensure it becomes their dream reality.

He added: "We're facing a lot of work to get to raise the funds we need to convert the hut.

"We're working hard for the next part of our project. We're ever hopeful if there's people willing to support us, whether it's financially or with ideas."

Mr Knight also heaped praise on the support he's received from architects in getting

He added: "I want to give lots of thanks to Gavin Porritt from DPA Limited who has been brilliant for us since I first met him in March 2020."

The approved application is for the change of use of storage/workshop building into a sports clubhouse (tennis) including erection of a side extension to form toilet facilities and installation of roof mounted solar panels.

The application has received plenty of public support.

Melanie Williams, planning officer for Shropshire Council, explained her decision.

She said: "The proposed development is appropriate in its design and scale and it will not have a detrimental impact upon the character and appearance of the existing building or the surrounding area.

"Furthermore the proposal will not have an adverse impact upon the residential amenities of the neighbouring properties."
