A CHIRK community stalwart was on hand to represent a number of groups involved in bringing news floodlights to a town bowling club.

Brian Colley, from Caffi Wylfa, joined with members of Chirk AAA Bowling Club in Holyhead Road on Tuesday, March 29 to official 'switch' the lights on.

Brian was representing his own centre but also Chirk Town Council, Sports Grant Wales, Kronopsan and an anonymous donor, who all contributed to install the new LED lights.

Peter Kempster, from Chirk AAA, thanked Brian for coming down and thanked all those who have supported them.

"Over the winter months we have undertaken a few repairs at our club," he said.

"The main one has been to replace our existing floodlights with LED units.

"With the help of Sports Grant Wales, Kronospan, Caffi Wylfa, Chirk Town Council and an anonymous donation we reached our target to get the work completed for the upcoming season."

He added: "It was a nice honour for Brian to do the switch on as he's a well-known face in the town.

"It was important that he was there to see the floodlights because it's the whole point of us getting their support.

"The goal of being able to do this wouldn't have been possible without them.

"It was important that someone came from that group to unveil the lights so that they can see what their money has helped."

Peter explained the importance of upgrading the floodlights for Chirk AAA bowls club – from getting jobs completed ahead of the season to longer playing and practising for members.

He added: "The floodlights have helped us complete a few jobs over winter and it allows members to play for longer.

"Our old ones used to take a while to come on because they were the halogen ones, and they sometimes either all came on, or some came on or none of them came on.

"These new ones are LED which are quicker and they use less energy.

"The old ones cost a lot but these aren't so bad especially in the current climate."
