The Labour Party attained a second successive landslide election victory while William Hague announced his resignation as Conservative Party leader after four years.

The September 11 terrorist attacks were carrie dout by al-Qaeda upon the United States of America. 67 UK nationals perished in the attacks, the largest loss of life from any nation other than the United States where the attacks take place.
