WELCOME to the Tizer Time Machine which this week whisks our beloved readers back as far as 1993.

It was a troubled year for the Queen as bookmakers cut their odds on the monarchy being abolished by the year 2000 from 100 to 1 to 50 to 1.

The Queen announced that Buckingham Palace would open to the public for the first time.

Diana, Princess of Wales, announced her withdrawal from public life

Unemployment fell for the first time since May 1990 and stood at 2,970,000, sparking hopes that the recession was nearly over.

The Department of Health revealed that the number of people on hospital waiting lists had reached 1,000,000 for the first time.

Manchester United became the first champions of the new FA Premier League, ending a 26 year wait to win the top division of English football.

The England national football team failed to qualify for the World Cup in America despite winning their final qualifying match 7–1 against San Marino.

National manager Graham Taylor quit weeks later.

The Welsh national side also missed out on a place in the World Cup after Paul Bodin misses a penalty in a 2–1 defeat at home to Romania. The game became infamous for the tragic death of a fan killed by a rocket flare let off in the stands at Cardiff Arms Park.
