STUDENTS at Ysgol Llanfyllin are making a difference by tackling social issues and supporting local charities.

The work has been part of school competition where pupils developed pitches for funding as part of a programme provided by a social action charity First Give.

Year 9 students sought support of their chosen charities, competing in a school final that saw judges viewing presentations from the students about each charity and their work.

Dewi Owen, head teacher of Ysgol Llanfyllin, admitted he was delighted with the outcome of the project.

He said: “This has been an amazing opportunity for our young people to take the lead on important issues within our community.

“I was amazed at their levels of confidence when they were presenting their final findings to their whole year group.

“The First Give project has had a hugely positive effect on our whole school family. Huge congratulations to the winning team and to all pupils who took part.”

The final was held on Friday, February 4 and would determine which class received a £1,000 First Give grant for their charity.

The eventual winners were DPJ Foundation, a mental health charity that supports people within the agricultural sector, represented by class 9A En2.

The pupils raised awareness of this mental health charity by holding a Wear Wellies Day, conducting an assembly online and by promoting information about the charity around the school site.

A special award commendation was also given to the pupils of 9A En1, who were supporting Shelter Cyrmu, for the animation they created in their presentation.
