AN OSWESTRY-based finance expert has moved to help people in the town deal with the impending cost of living crisis because of rising energy costs.

John Davies has advised many on lower incomes on how best to manage their funds and he spoke out after Conservative chancellor Rishi Sunak (pictured) announced the cap on energy prices would be lifted in April.

The news came on top of the planned National Insurance rise in the same month, as well as rising inflation and interest rates as the cost of living rises.

Mr Davies assured residents in the town there are ways to help support themselves but warned people must not be above asking for help.

He said: "Part of my professional career in the town often involved advising clients who might be very worried about their finances for any of a number of reasons.

"At the moment there will be many people who will be very concerned following the increase in interest rates, which is coinciding with prices of fuel going up and the horrendous increase in home heating costs.

"There are many sources of help at hand but the golden rule to help alleviate debt worry with regard to mortgages or loans is to contact your lender immediately.

"Keep a note of your conversation with the date and the name of the person you speak to, which is very important for future reference.

"Shropshire Council might be able to assist with their " Household Support Fund" offering a one off payment of £115 to certain recipients of benefits, or the " Local Support and Prevention Fund" for the vulnerable.

"Similarly the Department of Work and Pensions' website will give a wealth of information about possible help via a raft of benefits.

"The excellent Citizens Advice Bureau in Oswestry can help with debt counselling and possibly a voucher for the foodbank, whereas charitable agencies such as "Step Change" will also provide advice.

"Finally, the wonderful "Oswestry Community Kitchen and Food Hub" otherwise known as OsNosh provides two free meals per week from their address in Oak Street as well as a free food delivery."
