A HGV driver has marked his 60th birthday by having his hair shaved off by a sheep shearer for charity.

Trevor Evans, from Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, raised over £3,000 for the lifesaving Wales Air Ambulance (WAA) Charity after holding a fundraising event at his local village hall.

Over 130 attendees were treated to a band, disco, hog roast and raffle. Trevor’s head was sheared by a local sheep shearer Tom Morris and the commentator for the evening was Richard ‘Dicko’ Morris.

Sheep shearer Tom regularly sheared his own hair, but it was the first time he had been allowed near Trevor’s.

The dad-of-two held his fundraiser in conjunction with the village football club – Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, who organised the raffle, paid for the hire of the hall and donated money raised on the door.

Trevor was delighted to have raised over £3,000, which included over £700 that was donated by Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant Football Club.

He said: “I am very pleased with the support I had. I asked a lot of people, whoever I saw if they would like to donate to the fundraiser. It was definitely a birthday to remember. I like to thank everyone who donated and the football club for their support.

“People loved the evening. I don’t think anyone had ever seen anyone have their head sheared by a sheep shearer before. It is unusual, plus it was one of the first events, due to lockdown, and everybody enjoyed the night. I trusted Tom Morris with my heart, so I knew he would do a good job.”

Wales Air Ambulance offers advanced critical care and is often described as a ‘Flying ED’. The on-board consultants and critical care practitioners are highly skilled and carry some of the most pioneering medical equipment in the world. They can deliver blood transfusions, administer anaesthesia, and undertake emergency operations at the scene of the incident, before flying the patient directly to specialist care.

Now operational 24/7, the Charity needs to raise £8 million every year to keep the helicopters flying.

Dougie Bancroft, WAA community fundraiser, said: “Trevor definitely decided to mark his 60th birthday with a difference. A huge thank you to everyone who supported him in his fundraiser and donated.

"The event was a huge success and raised an incredible £3,000 for our lifesaving charity. Thank you so much, Trevor. I must say Tom Morris did a cracking job! The donation will help the charity to be there for the people of Wales 24/7.”

Following the success of his birthday fundraiser, Trevor has joked to his friends that he will do that same when he’s 70!
