A WREXHAM inmate has been given extra time behind bars for spitting in a prison officer's face.

Daniel Tung, 23, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court via video link from HMP Berwyn on Tuesday.

He admitted that on September 1 last year he assaulted prison officer James Moreton by beating him.

Prosecutor Rhian Jackson told the court that on the day Officer Moreton was called to assist colleagues in dealing with two men who had been restricted to a cell due to being under the influence of something and acting aggressively.

When the cell was opened one of the two men, Tung, stood in the doorway and attempted to push his way out.

As he was pushed back in and restrained on the ground, he spat into Officer Moreton's face - despite the officer attempting to calm him and de-escalate the situation.

Ms Jackson said the officer felt "completely violated" by the incident, which is a "regular occurrence" at the prison and is "completely unacceptable behaviour."

When he was shown footage of the attack by police, Tung maintained he didn't know anything about it but accepted it was him in the video and apologised.

Defending himself at the hearing, he told the court: "I honestly don't remember doing it - I was intoxicated, I didn't know what I was doing and I am ashamed of myself.

"I am wasting everyone's time because I acted in the way I did and I am sorry for that.

"I just want to go home to my family."

District Judge Gwyn Jones said: "In these difficult times spitting is considered more offensive and violates the person subjected to such spitting.

"It adds to the pain and trauma - they don't know what is going to happen.

"It is not acceptable."

Tung was jailed for 16 weeks, consecutive to his ongoing custodial sentence.

The District Judge told the defendant this meant his earliest release date, which was October 2023, would be extended by eight weeks.
