ARCHAEOLOGISTS will be back at Chirk Castle this month as they aim to unearth more of the site’s history.

The Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust (CPAT) will be digging at the National Trust site between Monday, September 6 and Sunday, September 19.

Work will focus on continuing the investigation of a building shown on historic maps from the 18th century.

Part of the building was excavated in 2019 and 2020. A post on the Chirk Castle Facebook page stated it is believed the building may have been a workshop of some kind.

It added: “The investigation this year will focus on discovering more about its use.

“The dig site is managed by CPAT with help of National Trust and CPAT Archaeology volunteers.

“You will be able to speak to the archaeology team at the dig every day they are on site. The main public open days are Sunday 12 and Sunday 19 September.

“The dig is at the start of the woodland walk, ask for details on site at Visitor Reception by the car park.”

There will be no work taking place on September 10, 11, 17 and 18.
