MOTORISTS up and down the country can't have failed to notice the rising fuel prices over recent weeks.

A litre of the fuel is now at an eight-year high, costing an average of £1.32 at UK forecourts, Government figures show, having risen for 32 consecutive weeks.

But this is below the price motorists in Oswestry are paying at the pumps.

The cheapest garages are the Shell on the A5 Holyhead Road and the neighbouring BP site off the Gledrid roundabout which both charge 132.9p per litre.

Texaco at St Martins Service Station charges 133.0ppl, while Morrisons in Oswestry, Esso at Mile End and Texaco at Mere Motors in Ellesmere, both charge 133.9ppl.

The most expensive is the Shell garage on Salop Road in Oswestry charging 134.8ppl.

Figures for the Texaco at Stan's in St Martins and the BP on Beatrice Street are not available.

Steve Gooding, director of motoring research charity the RAC Foundation, said that the rise in petrol prices means it was “no surprise” that more than one in 10 new cars sold in June were pure electric.

He continued: “With the oil price continuing to rise, and pump prices not far behind, it seems more and more people are doing the sums and finding that despite high purchase prices, the running costs of battery-powered vehicles really are too low to ignore.”

Average fuel costs were just £1.05 per litre of petrol and £1.12 per litre of diesel in May 2020, when the global shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic led to a collapse in the value of oil.

Figures for diesel are slightly higher with Texaco garages in St Martins Service Station, Stan's in St Martins, and Ellesmere's Mere Motors, plus BP in Beatrice Street, Oswestry, the cheapest at 135.9ppl.

Shell on Salop Road in Oswestry is slightly more expensive at 136.8ppl, closely followed by Morrisons at 136.9ppl.

And the most expensive is the Shell on the A5 Holyhead Road at 139.9ppl.

Figures are not available for the BP at Gledrid and Esso at Mile End in Oswestry.
