FRIENDS from Oswestry have completed a 1,000-mile cycling challenge to raise funds for two special causes close to them.

Seymour Roberts and Ben Fretwell raised more than £4,000 through the fundraising challenge, in memory of Seymour’s wife, Sally.

Sally died in 2017 after being diagnosed with cancer in 2013, and received treatment at both Chirk Hospital, where she used to work, and Wrexham Maelor Hospital’s Shooting Star cancer unit.

The pair recently finished the challenge of biking from Land’s End to John O’Groats – and a bit further – to raise the sum.

Seymour said he is very grateful to everyone who donated to the fundraiser, and is pleased to be able to give the money to the two chosen causes.

He said: “You don’t know how amazing they are until you see it when it happens to somebody close to you.

“The one lady at Shooting Star, Alison Roberts, used to ring my wife up at night when she was at home – it was just above and beyond really.

“Sally worked at Chirk Hospital and they wanted to look after her for her last week. They looked after her then, so we wanted to raise money for there too.

“It’ll never be enough to appreciate the work they do, no matter how much we raise.”

Land’s End to John O’Groats is a 980-mile trip, but the pair went past the 1,000-mile point on the last day of the challenge by completing another 25-mile stretch.

Seymour and Ben previously raised £6,000 for the same charities through a biking challenge in 2018 which saw them travel from London to Cologne.

Seymour, 58, thanked everyone for their generosity with donations and support.

He said: “I just want to thank everyone who has given to us really. Especially in this time of crisis with everything that’s been going on.

“We raised about £4,000 which I’m more than happy with.”
