This week is all about the big screen with two films screening at our local cinema, Kinokulture.

First up it’s the live action prequel to 101 Dalmatians, the surprisingly well-reviewed Cruella, starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson alongside a cast of well-known faces. I have to admit, this sounded like yet another pointless prequel/sequel but on closer inspection it looks like an absolute delight.

Set in a grimy 1970s London against the backdrop of the burgeoning punk scene, it follows Cruella DeVille’s rise to infamy as she locks horns with Emma Thompson’s ruthless fashion designer. Expect barbed witticisms, sparkling couture fashion and stark make- up in a film more suited for the grown- ups than the young ones.

With a script from the writer of the brilliant skating biopic I Tonya and a real visual flair, Cruella has received universal acclaim. If, like me, it doesn’t initially sound like your kind of thing, give the trailer a viewing and I think you’ll love it. Screening Friday, July 16 to Thursday, July 22, times vary.

Next Tuesday, July 20, sees another film that fell through the cracks last year, acclaimed US indie comedy drama, Saint Frances. Drifting thirty-something Bridget leads a fairly aimless life, waitressing while never knowing what she truly wants. While dealing with emotional repercussions from a pregnancy termination, she takes a job as a nanny to a smart six-year-old girl, Frances.

As their friendship develops, Bridget starts to get a better understanding of herself and her hopes. This smart witty film deals with some heavy themes with a deft comic touch, never shying away from the messy side of life, but always ready with some light relief. It won many a film festival award back in 2019 and deserves a viewing. Tickets are available through www.oswestryfilmsociety.com
