An investigation into ‘irregularities’ in a highways team in Powys is to be investigated by Dyfed-Powys Police, the force has confirmed.

Allegations of misconduct were referred to Powys Council more than a year ago, and the police have now confirmed that they are looking into the matter as well.

An internal investigation was initiated by Powys County Council following a complaint made by Cllr Bryn Davies who represents Llanwddyn.

A spokesman for Dyfed-Powys police said:  “We an confirm that we have been approached by Powys County Council in respect of potential irregularities.

“An investigation has commenced.

“At this stage we are working with the council to fully understand the issues.”

A spokesman for Powys County Council said: “Discussions have taken place with Dyfed Powys Police and Audit Wales.

“Cabinet members have been advised of the investigation.

“The council is still investigating the allegations and cannot comment until all actions are complete.”

Plaid Cymru group leader Cllr Elwyn Vaughan has written to Dyfed-Powys acting chief constable, Claire Parmenter, asking that the force formally investigate the matter.

Cllr Vaughan said: “There are many claims and suggestions circulating and hence it is imperative that a external professional arms length organisation steps in and conducts a full and comprehensive investigation to get to the root of the matter and to take the appropriate steps needed.”
