THE organiser of a 100km charity cycling event that will start in Oswestry says spaces remain for anyone wishing to take part.

Lingen Davies Cancer Fund is backing the Pedal the Borders event on Sunday, July 25, which will see cyclists take on a brand new route starting and finishing in Oswestry, travelling out to Lake Vyrnwy in Powys and enjoying the scenic border countryside.

More than 120 people have signed up to the event, which is being run by Alan Lewis, of Adrenaline Sporting Events, the team behind the popular Oswestry 10km run and the recent Midnight Ride which Alan insists is a perfect template for people to get back out and take part in group cycling challenges.

“We’re back doing events in a slightly different way but the emphasis remains on rider care and safety following all of the guidance issued by British Cycling,” he said.

“The Midnight Ride went very well and we obviously had full Covid compliance regulations in place which was very well received.

"The riders felt safe and were comfortable, which will be the same for the Pedal the Borders event.”

Lizzy Coleman, events and fundraising officer at Lingen Davies, said she is delighted at the uptake and everyone is looking forward to a wonderful day of fundraising.

“We’re very excited to be running this event at last and still have a few places left for anyone keen to take part," she said.

"Each rider is asked to commit to raising £1 for each km of the 100km route.

“Pedal the Borders is being run by Adrenaline Sporting Events on our behalf and we know everything will be Covid compliant and rider safety will be paramount.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to Aico for being our headline sponsors, and to Craven Dunnill, The Business Company, Rix Petroleum, Brooks Cycles in Welshpool, JT Hughes cars and Yarrington who are also supporting the event."

The entry fee includes medical cover, bike maintenance cover, on-the-road assistance, British cycling insurance, a finishing medal, arrival drink, two food and rest stops along the route, and food and drink at the end of the event.

Lingen Davies Cancer Fund is the only charity committed to supporting active cancer treatment for people in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Mid Wales.
