Time to mosey on down to Kinokulture this weekend to watch the latest film from US director Kelly Reichardt, the warmly received First Cow.

Set in the 1800s in rural Oregon, it’s a lovely tale of two entrepreneurs using the arrival of the first cow in town as a chance to better themselves by stealing its milk to make biscuits to sell.

Reichardt’s career is based on small scale films about working class people and her latest looks like a real charmer. Toby Jones stars the owner of the cow, ‘udder’ actors also feature.

NOWTV delivers high art amid the low expectations on its roster of June releases. This month sees ex-Eastender Craig Fairbrass in the surprisingly acclaimed recent UK film, Muscle. Marking somewhat of a sea change for Fairbrass, usually to be found in low budget action dross, here timid middle aged telesales worker Simon falls under the spell of personal trainer Terry (Fairbrass).

What follows is an unexpectedly great tale of obsession and masculinity gone astray, beautifully filmed in black and white. Muscle exceeds every expectation, highly recommended.

Lastly, an unusual gem currently streaming free for Amazon Prime members, 2018’s Swedish film The Unthinkable, one of the best films you’ve never heard of that you’re likely to see.

As Sweden suffers strange terrorist events, electricity and phone blackouts, and unexplained illnesses, we follow a range of people trying to escape Stockholm. This film succeeds by giving us characters we can care about and paying as much attention to the script as it does the (impressive) CGI.

The first-time film-makers keep all their plates spinning while delivering some stunning set pieces on an ultra low budget. Worth your month’s subscription alone, make a date with it now.
