ONE of the highlights of the Oswestry civic calendar is back as the town bids for gold in a national competition.

Oswestry in Bloom will again be hunting for a top award in the Heart of England Competition trying to maintain its very high standards of years gone by.

Betty Gull, chairman and one of the leading lights of Oswestry in Bloom, said that once again the judging will be once restricted to the roadside because of Covid-19, but hopes residents can join in.

She added: "Part of our bid will show the judges what lovely gardens the people of Oswestry create and is always a highly successful July competition.

"Margaret Thrower, gardening expert and daughter of famous TV gardening presenter Percy Thrower, will again be judging this year but because of restrictions it will be limited this year.

"All front gardens in Oswestry will be judged from the roadside, so there will be no need to nominate those this year.

"However, if you would like to enter your rear garden in the competition Miss Thrower has kindly agreed to judge them."

Meanwhile, an Oswestry Town Council spokesman added: "The Town Centre Window Competition will also be taking place again with a theme of Butterflies so let your imagination fly.

"Please contact Louise Humphreys at Oswestry Town Council for an entry form and further information on 01691 680222 or email"
