A MEMORIAL bench was unveiled in Chirk on Friday to commemorate those in the town for their community spirit during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The bench, which is situated at the Memorial Gardens in the town, has been put in place to remember the key workers who helped see the town through the pandemic, and the families who have lost loved ones.

Chairman of Chirk Town Council, Councillor Brian Colley, unveiled the bench, and a commemorative plaque, on Friday and felt a permanent recognition of the community’s effort was necessary.

He said: “This is in recognition of the superb community spirit and help given by individuals, groups and businesses to Chirk residents, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Many comments have been made regarding the Chirk community spirit, and councillors unanimously agreed that a permanent symbol of recognition and thanks should be made.

“Chirk Town Council therefore dedicates the bench and plaque to the people of Chirk.”

The plaque reads: “This is to commemorate and thank all the residents and businesses in Chirk for their significant efforts during the 2020-21 Covid-19 Pandemic.

“Exemplary community spirit conquered the challenges that beset the Town.”

The bench was made by local wood carver and artist, Jim Heath, while the idea was originally thought up by Cllr Dorothy Griffiths.

Cllr Colley thanked both for their initiative and hard work to ensure the idea came to fruition.

He added: “Even the smallest acts have been recognised – so thank you to everyone.

“We must also remember those families in Chirk who have lost a loved one or suffered during the Pandemic and give them our sympathy, help and prayers.

“Special thanks for organising this event to Cllr Griffiths who has worked hard on this project.

“And of course many thanks to our local wood carver and artist Jim Heath who built the bench and plaque – great work Jim.

“Also thanks to Glyn Evans and Ben Stokes for the bench installation and Karen Brown, town clerk for the organisation.”
