IT is hard to imagine Oswestry without one of its landmark pubs.

For more than a century the Boar's Head has stood proudly on Willow Street.

In the 1870s this was owned by James England, who had previously run the George Hotel on Bailey Head, and would form the Oswestry Victuallers Association before his death in 1896.

The pub continued to serve the community.

An invoice dating back to September 30, 1907 from Alfred England, Boar’s Head Hotel was paid by Longueville & Co, Solicitors following the death of Mr Thomas Evans, Underhill, Pant.

In the century which followed the pub welcomed a host of well-known names, including T'Pau star Carol Decker, Ian Godfer, Dean Gaffney of Eastenders fame and Roy Wood.

A pub spokesman said: "We're very community based so everything we do is with the community in mind. We want to cater for everyone, such as giving free food away to customers at least once a week, we'll be looking at putting events on on a regular basis

"We've got 10 TVs so far so we can show multiple sports at the same time; we've started bingo, quizzes, as well as setting up pool and darts teams for the new season.
