A SWAN at a tourist attraction near Oswestry has been named after the inspirational Captain Sir Tom Moore.

Whittington Castle asked its Facebook followers to vote for their favourite name suggestion for the new swan who recently arrived at the site.

It was a close race between Sir Tom and Barnaby for the winning name, but after votes from a Facebook poll and emails were combined, Sir Tom prevailed.

A post on the castle’s Facebook page read: “I am very pleased to announce that the new swan at Whittington Castle will be called Sir Tom!

“We would have filmed our chairman, Jonjo Evans, pulling the result out of a hat, but in the end it was not necessary as your votes decided.

“Let us hope that Sir Tom and Lady Beatrice have a long life together raising their future cygnets on the Castle moat for many years to come.

“Please share the information and we have our fingers crossed that we may still have eggs this year!

“Thank you to everyone who has voted and given some fantastic name suggestions over the last few days.

“Let their love shine through!”
