AN ELLESMERE couple who celebrated 60 years of marriage last weekend have been described as an 'inspirational pair'.

Margaret and John Thomas, who is known as Bernard, were able to celebrate at home courtesy of an afternoon tea delivered by family, including their three children Wendy, Carol and Paul plus three grandchildren Kellie, Jamie and Robbie, and their extended great-grandchildren.

Kellie says the pair have been through a tough year with medical issues alongside the lockdown but said that Bernard has been a 'rock' to her grandmother throughout.

"They are the best grandparents you could wish for – the most loving couple," she said.

"Despite health issues with Nan having a brain tumour removed 30 years ago, and now my mum Wendy has just had the same kind of tumour removed.

"Plus Nan has just undergone radiotherapy for breast cancer but she still ensures the kettle is on and everyone’s fed before they leave.

"Grandad does the best rendition of ‘the sun has got his hat on’ which is a song he used to sing that would make me cry with laughter when I was little.

"This year has been tough for everyone, especially with social distancing and no hugging but these two have got each other through the toughest of times; Grandad especially has been Nan’s rock.

"A pandemic is no match for them, and they truly are an inspirational pair."
