A MAN put his hands around his teenage daughter's throat as he assaulted her and his son, a court has heard.

Russell Wayne Evans, 55, of Ash Road, Oswestry, had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of assault by beating, which took place in Llanymynech last year, when he appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court.

He returned to court for sentencing after the production of a pre-sentence report by the probation service.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, said the incident was "domestic-related" and involved his twin children who were 17 at the time of the offences, last September.

Evans, who was "highly intoxicated" smashed a plate on the cooker and then squared up to his daughter in an aggressive manner.

She pushed him away from her, but he threw a dog bowl at her and then "put his hands around her throat", according to Ms Tench.

He also squared up to his son and slapped him across the face.

In a police interview Evans said he could not remember putting his hands around his daughter's throat, but admitted to assaulting his son.

Robert Hanratty, defending, said Evans, a man of previously good character who works as a butcher, was "extremely remorseful".

He added: "He is a loving father and is very keen to build bridges with his children."

After reading the pre-sentence report, Susan Usmar, chair of the magistrates bench, gave Evans an 18-month community order with a £583 fine.

He will also pay £85 costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

No compensation was awarded to the victims as the magistrates did not want to exacerbate the situation between family members.
