A WOMAN whose grandparents’ graves were damaged in Chirk said the incident has left her feeling upset and angry, as she called for more CCTV in cemeteries.

Emma Clutton, who lives in East Sussex, said it was disgusting and disrespectful after seeing pots smashed and an RAF cross removed from the graves of her grandparents in the cemetery at St Mary's Church.

Her grandparents, Joyce and Leonard Clutton, both lived in Chirk for many years and were well-known in the community.

Emma said the incident has caused a lot of stress for her and members of her family.

“My auntie has been there to tidy it up and put flowers there,” she said.

“My grandparents were both from Chirk and lived there, they were well-known people around the area.

“Grandad worked in maintenance as a sergeant in the RAF – there was an RAF cross on his grave and that has been removed and thrown.

“There were pots with Christmas trees in it which had been smashed up as well. It’s been trashed.

“It has caused a lot of stress.”

Emma believes that having the area monitored by CCTV could reduce the risk of incidents like this from happening in the future.

“We were only there three or four weeks ago and put flowers down then,” she added.

“It’s just ridiculous how someone can actually go in and do this, because it’s not as if my gran’s grave is right by the entrance – it’s quite a way in.

“You hear about this happening to other people because there are sick individuals out there; but until it happens to you, you don’t realise how upset it can make you.

“I think something needs doing to be able to monitor for situations like this.

“It may catch people doing things like this or may deter them from doing it all together.

“There are houses across the way, but people may not be able to see everything there and won’t be home all the time.

“I honestly think CCTV should be put there.”
