THE committee which organises an annual sporting event in Oswestry is set to provide funding for local clubs after having to cancel for the second consecutive year.

Oswestry Community Games was scheduled to go ahead in September, but the committee for the Games has decided to cancel the event because of circumstances regarding Covid-19.

The pandemic also led to the cancellation of the event in 2020.

In place of the Games, the committee has announced it will be targeting a number of clubs and organisations in the coming months, to which they will provide limited financial support to help them run an event of their own choice.

The change of approach was made to allow clubs to deliver their own events in a safe way in their own environments.

Clive Knight and Hazel Davies, the key organisers of the Games, thanked clubs for their support.

They said: “Thank you to all our clubs and organisations over the last eight years for the Oswestry Community Games.

“Without your amazing support, the Games would not happen. We feel this new approach for 2021 will offer a sensible and safe alternative in this most challenging year.

“This initiative will provide a little financial support to them to help deliver an activity of their choice and will help maintain our connection with each of them.

“That the clubs and organisations will run an event in their own timescale rather than attend a one off day in Cae Glas Park may well, in fact, work better for them in this very challenging year.

“We will look forward however to welcoming all the clubs back into Cae Glas Park in September 2022 for what we are sure will be a huge coming together and celebration of our 10th Oswestry Community Games.”
