The chairman of Chirk Town Council has raised concerns regarding a noticeable increase in the amount of dog fouling in the town.

Councillor Brian Colley raised concerns along with fellow councillors at a council meeting last month and recently admitted he is worried about incidents of dog fouling particularly at the field in Chapel Lane.

He also stated it is upsetting business owners in the town.

Cllr Colley said although most dog walkers in the area clean up after their dog, the council wants to ensure the town remains clean and safe by encouraging all dog walkers to act responsibly.

“It appears to be an increasing nuisance in the area for the residents,” he said.

“Many dog owners do clean up after their dogs appropriately, and place it in an appropriate bin, but there are increasing numbers of incidents on the pavements where this isn’t the case.

“We also have concerns about it on the playing fields near the school in Chapel Lane.

“That is a real concern for us when young children are playing football there.

“To resolve the issue, it’s a matter of education and expressing our concern, but then at the end of the day, we will have to monitor the issue and take action.”

Cllr Colley said the issue may have to be reported to Wrexham County Borough Council if it continues to be an issue for businesses and residents.

He said: “We are concerned because, as I mentioned, we have a number of football pitches which are used by children.

“A lot of work goes in from local residents to provide safe pitches for children to play on by clearing any dog mess before they do so.

“But they shouldn’t have to do that, it’s not acceptable.

“On top of that, we’ve had a number of businesses upset about it in the town and have received some comments from those concerned.

“Another concern I have is for mothers using pushchairs – they shouldn’t be having to try and avoid this on the pavements. It’s unacceptable.”
