A young Oswestry boy is taking on a running challenge to raise funds in memory of victims of a terror attack in 2017.

ALFIE Davies, aged seven, is set to run 22 miles – a mile in memory of each victim of the Manchester Arena bombing.

The incident, which happened after an Ariana Grande concert, killed 22 victims as well as injuring more than 1,000 people.

Alfie and his mother, Cheryl McCarthy, are members of the Hive 22 running club – a club set up in memory of the victims by a policeman who attended the incident.

The club is running in memory of the victims, with adults taking on the 22-mile-long Run to Remember, and children taking on the Mini Hive mini-mile.

Cheryl explained how Alfie decided against running the mini-mile, and instead vowed to take on 22 miles.

“We’ve both been part of the running club for a while,” she said. “Alfie is super fit and active so he decided he wanted to give this a go.

“He really likes the fundraising idea – when I asked which run he wanted to do, he replied saying ‘which one will make more money for the charity?’.

“I told him the 22 miles and he said ‘well I’m doing that then’.

“I’m extremely proud – I could’ve cried when he said he wanted to do whichever one will make the most money for the charity.

“He gets why we’re doing it – he’s not just doing it because he wants to run.”

Families of those who died in the fatal attack have set up several charities since the event, and Alfie hopes to raise £200 to go towards those.

Cheryl said the efforts of the running group’s founder have been inspiring.

She said: “There are six charities in all which have been set up by families of the victims for different things.

“I know the Chloe and Liam Foundation aims to help children with scholarships for theatre school and performing arts because that’s what they were really in to.

“The run raises money for these charities. The man who set up Hive 22 was a policeman there on the night of the attack, and he wanted to do something to raise money and awareness.

“He started running himself by completing 22 10k races in honour of each of the victims. Upon finishing each race, he had the medals engraved and given to the families of the victims.

“He’s now a fireman and the last 10k race he did, he completed in his full firefighter kit.”

Alfie said he feels confident about completing the 22 miles.
