Still firmly on the small screen, this week we have a whistle stop tour of the streaming services, starting with Netflix and the thoroughly entertaining new French series ‘Lupin’.

This five-part series stars French superstar Omar Sy (Untouchable, Samba) as the suave and sophisticated thief working his way through a series of daring escapades, all while trying to discover the true story behind his father’s death.

Sy sprinkles stardust on almost anything he appears in, hugely charismatic and with genuine screen presence, he helps this beautifully shot tale slip down easily.

Amazon Prime members have plenty of choices right now with a great selection of free to watch films. First World War drama 1917 has George MacKay carrying a vital message across no man’s land and beyond in a thrilling and moving drama filmed to look like one continuous take.

Or for something a little more off the beaten track, try the overlooked US comedy Bad Words which finds 40-year-old Jason Bateman exploiting a loophole to enter a children’s spelling competition.

Bateman is a likeable actor at his best when the world seems to be conspiring against him, and he turns in a typically charming performance as a fairly unlikeable person who redeems himself by the end. With a few darker moments, Bad Words is much sharper than the schmaltzy comedy it may sound.

Lastly, for anyone missing the kind of arthouse gems often found screening at Kinokulture, NOWTV is well worth signing up to for a month’s trial. Many ‘smart’ TVs or fairly recent Firestick type devices should have a built in app, or you can sign up via your PC. You’ll find films like Miss Juneteenth, Never Rarely Sometimes Always and Clemency, all of which would comfortably screen at our community cinema.
