FRESH figures from Public Health Wales show exactly where coronavirus has been circulating within the Powys community.

The map – provided by health officials in response to COVID-19 - presents data broken down beyond the standard local authority areas and shows how individual communities compare.

This week we have switched to a weekly rather than three-weekly snapshot of the figures, and included the south of county, beyond the County Times' traditional patch.

It shows that the Rhayader/Elan Valley area had more than a quarter of its entire cases for the whole pandemic in the week to January 16, while Ystradgynlais has the highest number of cases in the county since the pandemic began, with 582. The next highest area for cases is Brecon with 302.

The Llanfyllin and Montgomery areas have seen a slight rise but on a positive note after an outbreak before Christmas, the rate of new cases in Llanidloes has come right down.

The data is gathered using Office of National Statistics figures of middle layer super output areas (MSOAs) and present the rolling number of cases in either a seven-day or 21-day window.

Darker areas indicate higher concentrations of the virus whilst lighter areas show lower transmission rates. The map details state that case numbers are suppressed for any MSOA where there were fewer than three identified cases.
