CRAIG Williams has become synonymous with Newtown and one of the most recognisable faces in the JD Cymru Premier.

During more than a decade of service the flying full-back has become a Latham Park lynchpin and terrace hero, representing his hometown club in Europe and earning Wales C honours.

The County Times spoke with the Newtown star as part of its 'Getting to Know' series.

What has been your biggest achievement in your Welsh football playing career?

The biggest achievement in my Welsh football playing career would be winning the playoffs in 2015 to get into the Europa League, and also reaching the Welsh Cup Final and playing in that match at Latham Park in front of our fans.

What is your biggest disappointment in your Welsh football playing career?

The biggest disappointment was not winning that Welsh Cup Final, we came up against one of the best TNS sides there has been on the day but gutted not to have a winners medal from that day.

Biggest inspiration in your career?

The biggest inspirations in my career were my parents, especially my dad, who was a player himself but who coached me as a child in the local junior league and all the way through the ages.

They took me anywhere and everywhere to play football without a grumble for year after year at a fair personal sacrifice at times so they are my inspiration.

Best ground you ever played at?

The best ground I’ve ever played at was the Telia Parken Stadium in Copenhagen which is the Danish national stadium. It was amazing to play in such a huge arena and a special memory that I won’t forget.

Best team-mate?

My best team mate would be Kieran Mills-Evans. Although he doesn’t always get the praise he deserves, he is never below a 7/8 out of 10, does everything asked of him and more very well, is so consistent with his performances, and you know he will give his all every single time he steps on the pitch.

Most difficult opponent?

There have been a few tricky opponents who have caused me trouble over the years but one of the toughest would have to be Ryan Brobbel. His movement and skill are difficult to cope with at times.

Most memorable match?

My most memorable match was the Europa League game in Copenhagen, which will never be beaten, however there were numerous festive period derbies against Caersws that drew crowds of over a thousand and were always tasty games so they stick in the memory too.

Advice to a young player

My advice to a young player would be to work hard, both on and off the field, and to always do the little things/basic things as well as you can.
