PARENTS in Wrexham are being encouraged to consider the benefits a Welsh medium education could offer.

Wrexham Council stated that around three quarters of the world’s population speak two or more languages, and parents should consider the possibilities that this skill could have before applying for their child’s school place.

A spokesperson for the council, said: "We are committed to providing good quality education and equality of access in the national language of choice.

"We work closely with a range of partners and stakeholders to further raise standards in literacy and numeracy, and to tackle the impact of poverty on education achievement.

"We have produced a booklet offering further information on the advantages of a bilingual education.

"The booklet offers a guide to the benefits of bilingualism, dispels certain myths, offers case studies and also signposts to further Welsh language resources and organisations."

Cllr Phil Wynn, lead member for education, said: "Applying for a child’s school place is an important part of their educational journey.

"It’s well worth a look at the booklet we have produced before deciding if you would prefer your child to have a bilingual education or not."

Cllr Hugh Jones, lead member for people – communities, partnerships public protection and community safety, who has responsibility for the Welsh Language, said: "A Welsh language education is a skill that could give your child a competitive advantage for life."
