Staff at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt hospital's spinal injuries unit have been working with one patient's specialised rehab.

Staff on the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI) have gone above and beyond to provide personalised rehabilitation.

Jenny Clayton, occupational therapist, and Kate Betts, rehabilitation technician have been supporting patient Jonathan Davies with welding as part of his rehabilitation.

Mr Davies, a patient on MCSI at the hospital since earlier this year, is a chartered engineer and welded for many years prior to his injury.

Jenny and Kate organised for him to visit Livability Maesbury Metals, in Maesbury Road Industrial Estate in Oswestry.

He said: “I am so thankful to Jenny and Kate for organising the visit for me – it was great to be able to weld again and I couldn’t have done it without all their help and support.

“I’m really looking forward to visiting again and trying out some more welding.”

Jenny said: “When Jonathan was transferred to MCSI from his previous hospital, we quickly established that one of his occupational therapy goals was to be able to weld again.

“I started to look online at local facilities that could potentially offer a patient outing, and found Livability Maesbury Metals, and they could not have been more helpful or welcoming.“The injury Jonathan sustained included the loss of nearly all movement and sensation in both of his arms and hands. Although due to his rehabilitation, some minimal movement and sensation has returned.

“Throughout his rehabilitation therapy, he’s worked really hard to get to the point where he is now, and we’re all really proud of the progress he has made.”

Livability Maesbury Metals are a charity-run organisation where adults with disabilities and mental health problems can go to learn a new skill, provide a place for people to get work experience and feel part of the community.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there were a range of precautions in place to ensure the safety of Jonathan, Jenny and Kate.

Kate said: “Livability Maesbury Metals really went above and beyond for us – they ensured we came on a day when they had fewer of their usual clients to ensure social distancing was adhered too and they also took our temperatures when we arrived.

“We all had a great time, and Jonathan did a fantastic job after not welding since February.”
