Available to watch on Netflix, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch is a must-watch Christmas film but it raises the question of whether it’s better than the original.

Released in 2018, this film tells the much-loved story of the Grinch (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) and his disdain for Christmas. He plans to ruin Christmas for the residents of Whoville but instead embarks on a heartwarming journey to find happiness. Each rendition tells the story slightly differently with this one having lots of amusing and new plot moments.

The animation style is fun and visually stunning with bright colours and wonderfully exaggerated facial expressions. It has a very modern feel to it with a contemporary soundtrack supplied by Tyler, The Creator and narration by Pharell Williams.

One negative aspect of this film is the character of the Grinch himself. Cumberbatch’s version of the character doesn’t feel ‘mean’ enough. There are too many likeable moments towards the start of the film which make it difficult to see him as the villain.

In comparison to Jim Carrey’s Grinch, this one just feels too nice and it doesn’t have the same dramatic flair as his, but does have a childish feel, as Carrey’s is much more grown-up.

If you get the time this Christmas, this film is worth it.
