On Friday, First Minister Mark Drakeford said the 17-day firebreak achieved what it had set out to do, but admitted the virus was spreading again quicker than "we had anticipated".

Further restrictions will come into force next week, with indoor entertainment venues such as cinemas and bowling alleys having to close and tighter measures being implemented in the hospitality sector.

Mr Drakeford said: "The advice we have is that the firebreak achieved everything that we had hoped for it, it probably achieved a little bit more in the extent to which it suppressed the virus.

"The problem is that in the post-firebreak period, as people have mixed it’s come back faster and further than we had anticipated and that it why we are taking the additional actions that I’ve described today."

He has not ruled out another firebreak lockdown in Wales in the future.
