THE tower of the old police station in Wrexham town centre has been demolished.

The former police HQ was demolished on Sunday morning with controlled explosives as the town watched the iconic moment.

Wrexham Council launched a live video stream from around 8.15am which garnered thousands of views as residents were advised to stay at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Work dismantling the site has been ongoing for several weeks to make way for a new Lidl supermarket.

Several roads were also closed off including Park Avenue and traffic going up Park Avenue towards the former station was diverted along Penymaes Avenue, Powell Road from Tesco to Chester Road roundabout and Chester Road roundabout.

Retail giant Lidl applied to knock down the high-rise structure at Bodhyfryd in August 2018 to replace it with a new store measuring 1,325 square metres.

Sgt Claire McGrady previously said: "I worked in the station for a number of years as a Custody Sergeant and in other roles.

"There are a lot of fond memories which have been made there.

"Demolition started properly this week.

"It is changing the skyline of Wrexham and it is sad to see it coming down but it is making way for the future.

"With that coming down, North Wales Police has invested in a fantastic new police station in the town centre which will cater for the needs of the community."
