A HEALTHCARE assistant at Gobowen's Orthopaedic Hospital, has been presented with a monthly Health Hero Award in recognition of bravely speaking up for a gravely-ill patient.

June Swannick, who works on Ludlow Ward, was presented her award by Mark Brandreth, chief executive at the hospital.

Her actions were highlighted by Dr Ruth Longfellow, consultant anaesthetist and associate medical director, who said June’s swift judgement and persistence potentially saved the patient’s life.

She said: “A patient who was admitted to Ludlow Ward from Theatre became very unwell, very quickly; June spotted that the patient's monitor was alarming and checked to find the patient in a critical condition.

"She prompted Becky, Ludlow Ward Sister, who realised the patient, did not have a pulse and wasn’t breathing.

“Thanks to June’s quick and calm actions, the patient had the necessary medical assistance and the patient’s condition improved very quickly.“If June had not raised her concerns in the swift manner that she did, I believe things would have turned out differently, and I’m truly grateful to her for her excellent observation skills and the care she showed. She should be very proud.

“The whole team on Ludlow Ward also deserve a mention for their actions.”

The Health Hero Award is presented to a member of staff at the Oswestry-based hospital every month who has gone above and beyond for patients and staff.

June said: “I feel very honoured but also shocked to receive this sort of recognition. I definitely wasn’t expecting it; all I did was do what any of us would’ve done in that sort of situation.

“I’d like to say thank you to Ruth for the nomination. It’s definitely an award for the whole team on Ludlow Ward.”

Mark said: “This story is a real example of the importance of having the bravery to speak up. June demonstrated complete courage and outstanding care that day.

“I am delighted to announce her as the latest winner of the Health Hero Award.”
