BRAVERY was the key to victory for Wem's Isaac Vickery as he secured another win under-10 win in the cyclocross series.

The latest race took place in the midlands, albeit at the Heart of England Conference Centre in Coventry, some distance from Wem.

With the weather set fair and familiar rivals on the grid Isaac hoped that his busy week would not affect his legs too much.

To maintain his fitness Isaac climbs on a Monday to strengthen his upper body, plays football on a Tuesday night, and on Wednesday and Thursday night he had been to Weston and Corbet woods on his mountain bike for hill training.

The course itself was fast with short lush grass and the start was wide which allowed the 20 starters to get away without any issues.

The relatively flat course had one major obstacle, a steep bank which was made very tricky to navigate as the entry to it was a steep decline with a sharp hairpin.

Ultimately the race would be won on this bank.

Arley Berry from Redditch Road and Path Cycle Club pushed Isaac hard for the first three laps but a slip on the steep bank allowed Isaac to ride away.

He tried to get back onto his wheel but failed and Isaac went on to complete the six-lap race first place, despite the intensive training regime earlier in the week.

Isaac travels to Yorkshire on Saturday to race in a much bigger field of riders and race the northern champion and the following Sunday he will jump on his mountain bike to race downhill in Gloucester.
