Shocklach Oviatt CE Primary School has been commended for their work in helping raise awareness of inclusivity.

Earlier this year the school achieved a Rainbow Flag award, which encourages schools to develop an inclusive approach to LGBT+, as well as developing strategies to effectively challenge and combat LGBTphobic bullying.

The conditions of the award are defined by the schools themselves and accomplished over 12 months with an added difficulty for Shocklach this year thanks to Covid-19.

Mel Gilbert from the school said a lot of work had gone into achieving the award.

“This award shows our commitment to the positive inclusion and visibility of LGBT+ people and to the eradication of LGBTphobic bullying,” she said.

“The children worked on our LGBT+ projects over lockdown so we were very pleased to gain the award.

“Although we started working towards the project 12 months ago, a big chunk of it had to be achieved via remote learning as not all the children were in school at the time.

“Congratulations Shocklach and thank you to last years y6 who worked hard on this project before they left, and during lockdown.”
