A DESIRE to downsize has been cited as one of the top reasons for a Malpas retirement development already having 25 per cent of its apartments reserved.

The Cedars, in Old Hall Street, has seen a surge in interest from over-60s living in the village in the weeks following the coronavirus lockdown.

Emma O'Connor, sales consultant for the Cedars puts this down to retirees having spent more time in their homes recently, and realising that downsizing could be an opportunity to enjoy a better quality of life.

"Stamp duty relief has been a welcome factor," said Emma. "The financial cost of downsizing is now significantly reduced for people meaning they can unlock more equity in their sale to put towards future retirement plans.

"Now more than ever we all want to feel safe and secure in our homes.

"For some lockdown and the Covid-19 restrictions have highlighted the need to be closer to family, to be in walking distance of local amenities where they provide such a vital lifeline, and a property that isn't too cumbersome to maintain.

"The stresses and strains have been felt by us all, but our elderly population have been worse hit and so it's important that we help those looking to make the move to ensure it's one that is better suited to their needs, and where they can feel safe and enjoy an independent lifestyle for longer."

Sales of McCarthy and Stone properties were put on hold during the lockdown with the business entirely focused on the safety and wellbeing of its residents.

With some restrictions having eased, McCarthy and Stone is able to offer sales appointments for The Cedars at its new marketing suite, where social distancing rules are in place to keep everyone safe.

Those interested in finding out more about plans and prices are invited to get in touch with Emma to make an appointment.

Emma added: "We have received lots of fresh interest in the Cedars so I would urge anyone keen on reserving their place and their pick of the plots at this exciting new development, to get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment."
